The foundation has, among other things, provided financial support to the widow of a sailor who is raising two daughters and facing many challenges. Below is a description of her situation.
APPLICATION FOR NON-REFUNDABLE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
I am reaching out to request non-refundable financial assistance due to the failure to receive compensation from the insurer (P&I Club) following the death of my husband – a sailor.
On January 30, 2022, my husband tragically died in the town of xxxx, Germany.
He worked for two years under an employment contract with the German shipowner xxxx as a sailor (AB), delivering service and supplies to wind farms, maintaining machinery, and ensuring crew safety. He signed a contract to work in a system of 4 weeks on duty followed by 4 weeks at home.
Tomek was 47 years old and loved the sea, where he spent most of his life. He tried to provide a decent life for his family, and being incredibly hardworking, honest, and responsible, he was always welcome on every ship. He didn’t serve on many ships; previously, he spent over 20 years on a bulk carrier transporting sugar.
Tomek was the “main breadwinner” of the family, so after his death, the situation for me and my two minor daughters became incredibly difficult. First, we lost – I lost my husband, and the girls lost their father; second, we lost our best friend and greatest support, including financial support. Our world collapsed, although the world around us unfortunately didn’t stop even for a moment.
Currently, I am a single mother of two girls.
xxxx, who despite being over 21 years old, remains dependent on me. She has suffered from anorexia for years, and after her father’s death, her illness worsened significantly. Julia was admitted to a private center xxxx in xxxxx weighing 37 kg at a height of 168 cm. Our healthcare system does not provide free medical care for people with eating disorders. Four weeks in the center cost about 14,000 PLN. My daughter spent 3 months and three weeks there, and after reaching a BMI of 16, she discharged herself against medical advice. She still needs help. After leaving the center, she “dropped” to 40 kg and maintains that weight. She uses private psychotherapy, psychiatric, and dietitian services. Due to her physical condition, she cannot work. A year ago, she graduated from high school (with very good results) and started studies in English philology at Piotrkowska University. Although she gave up during the first semester, she is already preparing for the next enrollment.
My second daughter – xx – is 15 years old and suffers from insulin resistance. For over two years after her father’s death, she was treated for anxiety neurosis and depression. She still uses private psychotherapy, though recently only occasionally. Two and a half years ago, she was diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter disease – tibial tuberosity inflammation – which forced her to give up dancing.
As if that were not enough, last March, I had to undergo cervical spine surgery (with the insertion of implants and a stabilization plate), which practically limited me almost completely for the next three months.
I have worked in a private company for 17 years, and for 9 years as an executive assistant. My monthly net income is about 5300 PLN. The girls receive family pension benefits after their father amounting to about 900 PLN net per person. Lenka also receives the 800+ benefit. We live in a TBS apartment where the rent and utilities (advance heating + waste disposal + water from a general meter) amount to approximately 1430 PLN per month. On top of that come electricity, water and sewage, gas, Internet, cable TV, and mobile phones. The apartment requires renovation. The bathroom tiles have peeled off across the entire surface and are only held by the grout, which is not entirely safe. I also had to buy a used 7-year-old car because without it, it’s difficult for me to commute daily to work on the city outskirts. Public transport practically does not reach here. I also could no longer afford to repair our old car (Citroen C5 from 2009).
I have considered taking on additional work many times, but my health and daily responsibilities don’t really allow it. Since my husband’s death, I have been treated for depression and anxiety neurosis, privately and without reimbursement for medication. I gave up my psychotherapy because it was too much of a financial burden on the household budget. Every month, my expenses exceed my income. Until now, I have relied on savings my husband and I accumulated, but these resources are now running out.
Despite everything, we try to enjoy each day. I would like to provide my children with a good life and a better start to their adult, “healthy” life, but for a single mother, it is truly a huge challenge.
I do not know what amount to request, so I leave it to your discretion. Please kindly consider my application favorably.
